this forest has been carbon dated to be over 12,000 years old. the old tree stumps are covered in barnicles which protect them against the water. as the seasons shift on the oregon coast there is sand brought in and out. so in the spring the stumps are exposed by as much as 15 feet (now they are about 2 feet) they think the forest was here before the continental plates shifted, putting the land under water. due to plates shifting, they think this part of the coast has been hit with a tsunami approximately every 300 years. the last one was in 1707.
